Description:
Ruby red in color with violet reflexes. The wine is open and fruity on the nose with an aroma of amarena cherry and a hint of cinnamon and marzipan. On the palate it is smooth and fruity, well-structured with soft tannins, sophisticated yet quaffable with the typical lightness of a Vernatsch wine, long in the finish. The typical South Tyrolean. The native Schiava grape variety was mentioned in a document in the Middle Ages already and has played a central role in winemaking in Alto Adige since the 16th century.

Production area:
The Schiava grapes flourish at an altitude of 350 - 400m a.s.l. on sandy, gravelly soils in the vineyards of St. Michael Eppan with a south exposition.
Vinification:
The grapes were de-stemmed and then fermented at controlled temperature (26°C) in stainless steel tanks for 8 days, followed by ageing in stainless steel.
Food pairing:
Best enjoyed slightly chilled with roasts, Wiener Schnitzel, boiled beef, sliced beef or veal with onions in vinegar.
Serving temperature:
12 - 14°C.
Ageing potential:
more than 5 years.

In 1845 the Benedictines moved from Muri in Switzerland to Gries in South Tyrol, where the order took over the Augustinian monastery. In so doing, they inherited a long tradition of wine-growing, which they nurtured in the spirit of a symbiosis of monastery, winery and estate that is still very much in evidence today. The result, in the 21st century, is a range of top-quality wines from MURI-GRIES like the Abtei Muri line, which has been produced from selected grapes from the very best sites since 1989. The MURI-GRIES wine estate comprises 35 hectares of vineyards in excellent locations in and around Bolzano and Appiano. The monastery vineyards offer an outstanding terroir, combining excellent soils with a highly favourable climate.
